Ferrari 599xx Evo Top Speed
In 2006, Ferrari made the Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano. The 599 stood for the engine displacement, all 6.0-liters of it, while the GTB was Grand Tourer Berlinetta. The Fiorano stood for the Fiorano test circuit and the car came well-received. In fact, the 599 is still dubbed as one of the greatest Ferraris of all time.
Coach-built by Pininfarina, the 599 GTB was introduced in 2006 as the 2007 model and finally replaced in 2013 by the F12 Berlinetta. But before they took the Ferrari 599 away, they made the Ferrari 599XX, and more importantly the even more insane Ferrari 599XX 'Evo'.
Very few people in the world got to own this Ferrari, making it an exclusive track beast that was super expensive and not even street-legal. But the heart wants what the heart wants, and if the super-deep pockets match, there's a match made in heaven. Or in the deepest recesses of avarice-laden hell. While the exclusive owners of the 599XX Evo got something they could leave all cars behind in, they could only do so on the track. Making people go slack-jawed with envy still has to wait.
Here's what we know of the Ferrari 599XX Evo, and to explain the tech behind this car, here's all we know about the 599XX as well…
Before the Evo, Is The 599XX
The 599XX was made by Ferrari as a track-version-only of the 599 GTB Fiorano, and yet the cars look way different. The fenders have aero fences, and the hood comes hole-ridden. There are air funnels on the C-pillars to funnel more air around the car from the side to the back, all the way to the carbon-diver blade-like spoiler to make the car faster than the very wind it competes against. There are two fans in the trunk as well that exert more downforce, automatically switching off when the car reaches 155mph.
Inside, all the plush of the GTB Fiorano is gone and replaced by bare metal with a roll cage added in for safety. The dash is nothing but carbon fiber with one LCD, and there are LEDs on the steering wheel to warn of redline. There is no backseat, just an alarming array of hoses and a box. The only thing the cabin does have is air-conditioning, so thank god and Ferrari for a little creature comfort. Why the strip show? To make the 599XX 600lbs lighters than the GTB Fiorano, a must if you intend to race in it to win.
The 599XX beats the GTB Fiorano with a 720-horsepower rating (108 horses more) and 506 ft-lb of torque (58 ft-lb more). And Ferrari has done so by practicing the dark arts over the engine and letting it redline at 9,000 rpm instead of the 8,400 rpm of the Fiorano. One major advantage: a little knob on the console which the Italians called "manettino". It rotates to nine positions. The first position takes away all traction and stability for maximum speed. The last position means you could not crash the car even if you tried.
Ferrari test driver Raffaele De Simone, took the 599XX 0 to 60 mph in 2.9 seconds, this, in the absence of launch control. And what's more, Ferrari warrants it for 5,000 km, worth about two years of racing.
Presenting the Very Niche 599XX Evo
The 599XX Evo (short for Evoluzione, as in Evolution) is not a new car, it's an upgrade package available on the 599XX. So the first course of order to get the 599XX Evo is that you should have a 599XX.
The one advantage you get over the 599XX is the "opening gap". An active rear wing design that opens and closes flaps just the way they do on airplane wings to increase or decrease momentum on the runway. Better still, they are just like the flaps used in Formula 1 racing and help manage the downforce between the front and rear axles based on other properties like steering wheel angle, acceleration, and speed.
Only 29 Ferrari 599XX were made, so the 599 XX Evo may as well exist in single figures.
And, The Mind-Boggling Prices
Finally, here comes the whopper. Being the owner of a 599XX gives you access to six racing days, replete with a team of Ferrari racing as well as engineers who have your explicit permission to be able to record data and improve vehicular dynamics for all their upcoming vehicles. You are also allowed to participate in other races, but a Ferrari team must accompany you for the same as well.
At the time, a Ferrari 599XX cost $1.75 million, so again, if you do need speed, Ferrari needs your money. In case you decided to go for the 599XX Evo, there was an additional $250,000 tag, taking the price of the 599XX Evo to a cool $2 million. Worth every penny if you have ever heard its distinctive, heart-thumping, challenge-laying high-pitched crescendo.
The Evo pack gives you another two years' worth of track racing with Ferrari, along with a better chassis and power output as well. In for a penny, in for a pound, we say. For what's another $250,000 for a track-crazy, Ferrari fanatic of a magnate?
